“Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions. Used at both the building and city-scale, it is argued that this idea has health, environmental, and economic benefits for building occupants and urban environments, with few drawbacks. Although its name was coined in recent history, indicators of biophilic design have been seen in architecture from as far back as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon”
Peter’s approach is consistent with this philosophy, which is to maintain the natural features of the site and integrate the building with the surrounding landscape. Building forms are designed to complement the terrain and engage the building with the surroundings. Natural features of the site such as major trees, rockscapes and topography are retained where possible while capitalizing on views. The building turns its back on the road and, and driveway leaving the City behind, but focusses outward on the natural surroundings such as lakes and rolling countryside. There is no front or back of a recreational home—all elevations are unified and integrated into the whole with similar materials and architectural treatments.
The process of arrival is designed to create anticipation and surprise by not revealing the whole interior at once. The visitor arrives at an entry hall, but the great room and view to the landscape is not immediately revealed. One turns the corner, and the windows widen, the ceiling rises and the dramatic view into the natural surroundings is presented, whether a lake or a pastoral scene.
The interior spaces are designed to maximize daylight from both above and around the building, and windows are created that integrate the exterior and exterior such that the dividing line between interior and exterior is blurred.
The occupants are therefore engaged with their natural surroundings in any season- rain or shine contributing to a sense of calm and relaxation. Designs are contemporary, uncluttered and simple while maintaining a warm and comforting ambience. Walking through the house, a viewer experiences a range of interconnected spaces that blur the line between interior and exterior.
The layout of recreational homes often varies from the norm because many such homes are far more informally organized, and often have several generations staying there in holiday periods. Therefore, it often makes sense to divide the house into precincts providing more privacy for various family members and guests.
